Heavy Rains Close Highway 115

It could take at least a week to repair a 40-foot section of state Highway 115, washed away by heavy rains in southern Colorado overnight.

The Florence Fire Department says monsoonal rains ripped away a large section of the roadway located between Florence and Penrose.

Highway 67 is being used as an alternate route, and police say that could be the case for several days because of the extent of damage.

Fremont County sheriff's deputies worked throughout the night to rescue stranded residents and motorists, after four inches of rain fell along Highway 115. A flash flood warning remained in place until three o'clock this morning.

Westbound US Highway 50 also had to be shut down when water flowed over the road west of Penrose -- and a wall of water is being blamed for damaging or destroying a bridge on County Road 132.

The high water also ripped out a bridge on County Road 123, just east of County Road 67.

Another flash flood warning goes into effect for much of the area today at noon.

The KKTV 11 News Storm Team forecast calls for more rain each afternoon through the remainder of this week.
