The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is releasing details about a sexually violent predator. David Strate lives in the Cimarron Hills neighborhood although authorities say he's deployed with the military right now.
He lives at 1309 Soaring Eagle Drive and has been at that address for the past 2 1/2 years. Strate was convicted in Virginia for arranging to meet a teenage girl for sex and then innapropriately touching her. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says if he had commited that same crime in Colorado, he would probably not be labeled a sexually violent predator. Colorado, though, has no choice but to recognize that designation from another state.
Neighbors are upset. Michael Dionne lives right across the street from Strate. “It horrifies me.”
The sheriff says there are currently 16 sexually violent predators in Colorado. At a meeting at Horizon Middle School, many parents come looking for answers about their neighbor. “We want to keep our kids safe,” Sharon Sharpless said.
Sheriff Terry Maketa says they hope to raise awareness about Strate and about sex offenders in general who live in the area. Since Strate moved to El Paso County, the sheriff says he hasn't been accused of any sexual offenses here.
When Strate was convicted back in Virginia, he never served jail time, only probation. To find out if any sex offenders are living in your neighborhood, return to the home page and click on the Crime Stoppers icon on the left hand side of the website.
