You can expect more cloud cover and cooler temperatures today. By later this afternoon, rain showers will develop across the Pikes Peak Region and slowly drift southward. These rain showers will quickly change to snow at higher elevations, and accumulations will be likely. At lower elevations, snow accumulation does not appear to be a big deal. The Colorado Wildlife Commission has approved issuing a record number of elk licenses for the approaching big game hunting season.
Commissioners approved a recommendation from the Colorado
Division of Wildlife to grant 146,000 antlerless and either gender elk licenses. That's 10,000 more than last year's allotment.
The division has been trying for years to reduce the state's elk herd to a manageable size, especially in the northwest part of the state.
The commission also approved a number of limited licenses for deer, black bear, pronghorn antelope and moose which are similar to last year's totals.
