A Fort Carson soldier drowned Thursday when a tank plunged into a canal west of Baghdad, and seven others were wounded in a grenade attack, the U.S. military said.
The tank, from the Fort Carson-based 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, drove into an artificial sand barrier and then dropped into the canal near the city of Fallujah, about 30 miles west of the capital, according to a briefing at the V Corps headquarters.
Efforts to resuscitate the soldier failed. The soldier's name was not made public pending notification of his next of kin.
None of the injuries in the grenade attack were life-threatening, Capt. Frank Rosenblatt said in Iraq.
Attackers lobbed two grenades into a walled compound in Fallujah where the soldiers were staying. Troops inside the compound opened fire on men who fled after the attack, but no one was captured or believed hit, said Rosenblatt, of the 82nd Airborne Division.
The 82nd Airborne is handing over control of Fallujah to the 3rd Armored Cavalry. Officers said the attackers' identities were unknown.
The attack came at about 1 a.m. Thursday, hours after the Americans fired on Iraqi protesters in the street outside, a U.S. intelligence officer reported.
Local hospital officials said two Iraqis were killed and 18 wounded.
