A proposal to do away with affirmative action in Colorado gets its most visible opponent Monday with Governor Ritter planning to announce his opposition to it.
The question is similar to ballot measures already passed in California and Michigan. It would prohibit state consideration of race or gender in college admissions and contracts.
Opponents say the measure could prohibit outreach efforts such as educational programs aimed at getting girls interested in math. Supporters insist the question would not bar any programs as long as they are open to everybody.
The Colorado university system has not taken a position on the proposal. A similar amendment is before voters this fall in Nebraska.
