Same-Sex Benefits

Newly elected members of the Colorado Springs City Council are vowing to make good on campaign promises to end same-sex benefits to city employees.

Mayor Lionel Rivera says a resolution directing city officials to remove the benefits from their budgets has been placed on Tuesday's agenda.

Colorado Springs City Council members in December narrowly approved the measure five-to-four.

Six of the seven council members elected on April First pledged to eliminate the program. But those promises have stirred some anger in the community.

If the council ends the program, five workers and two hospital employees who have signed up for the benefits will continue getting insurance coverage through the end of the year.
