Resolution FAQ - (Stacia Naquin)

With so many Coloradans losing property to wildfire, this may be a good time to evaluate your homeowners insurance and make sure you're covered in case of an emergency.
The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association says many companies are using various criteria as a basis to deny renewal of some homeowners insurance policies. For example, they tell residents they don't live close enough to a fire station, or the age or construction of their home makes them no longer suitable as customers.
The bottom line, people who live outside of the city limits will still be able to get insurance, but it will be at a higher cost.
Your best advice is to better-protect your home, by using more fire-resistant roofing materials and do other fire preventing measures, like cutting back trees and brush, etc.
It's also a good idea to talk to your insurance agent and take a hard look at your homeowners policy. Most insurance companies won't expand coverage if you're within 10 miles of a wildfire.
You'll also want to do a "walk through" and make an inventory of your belongings. The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association has a form you can print out to make this process a little easier.
