A patient at Littleton Adventist Hospital has died of a rare degenerative brain ailment called classic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
It's not clear how the person was infected.
The fatal disease affects about one in a million people worldwide.
The hospital says six other patients, who had surgery after the infected patient, have been alerted because of the remote possibility that the disease could be transmitted by surgical instruments.
