Passengers aboard a United Airlines jetliner diverted to Denver are grateful to fellow passengers and three Secret Service agents for overpowering a passenger who tried to open a door while in flight.

In the words of passenger Donna Bell of Visalia, California: "Had he opened the door, we'd all be dead."

Air Force jets were scrambled from Buckley Air Force Base and the plane landed in Denver where Jose Manuel Pelayo-Ortega was arrested. He will appear in court in Denver on Monday on charges yet to be determined.

No details on the suspect's background have been released.
