USOC Turmoil

U.S. Olympic officials say that additional duties assigned by Congress -- from supporting little league programs to fighting obesity -- compete with its responsibility to train gold-medal winners.

Jim McCarthy is a member of the USOC board of directors and says if the group has too many things to do, it won't do any of them well.

Acting USOC president Bill Martin told the House Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Wednesday that clarifying the Olympic committee's mission is the most important action Congress could take to help the committee.

Martin says without that clarity, the broad demands on the committee compete for limited resources. The committee has an annual budget of about $125 million.

Martin says the USOC cannot be all things to all people all of the time.

A panel spokesman says it appears Congress will have to overhaul the Amateur Sports Act this year to address problems at the USOC.
