Saturday marks the end of the field portion of basic cadet training at the Air Force Academy. AFA’s newest class will finish up training back at the Academy. Training doesn't officially end until August 2nd.

The class of 2012 is over the hump; over the hardest part.

"You're so glad that you've accomplished something not many people get to accomplish," said Austin Ollis, who comes all the way from North Carolina.

These rookies have staying power. According to an Air Force spokesman, usually 60 to 90 cadets bow out before basic training ends. This year, only 45 have left.

1303 cadets will finish basic training at the Academy.

For this class, it’s just the beginning. Four years to go.

Interesting facts about this class:

- Average GPA: 3.85
- High School President Or Vice President: 17%
- In Academic Honor society: 62%
- Athletic Letter Award Winners: 95%
- In High School Band Or Orchestra: 30%
- Boy Scouts Or Girl Scouts: 28%
- In The Civil Air Patrol: 9%
- In High School Junior ROTC: 13%

My daughter is the person running with the bayonet at the beginning of the clip! WOW! What a shock to see her on the local news! She has been training and working for this since 5th grade! Her Dad just retired after 26 years as USAF pilot so she knows what her life will be like. God Bless all the Cadets and all of the US military! Thank you for the story!

It's nice to see not much has changed since going through Beast 13 years ago when these Basics were in Elementary School. The years have just flown by. The first 4 as a cadet certainly felt the longest of all.

My son is also one of the cadets and we certainly are very proud of him. He is the first family member to attend an Academy to become an officer. I am extending from all of our family thank you for such a great story and excellent coverage.

Nice short about the AFA Cadets. My grandaughter is one of them. Reminds me of my Army basic about 60 years. It looks even tougher now and covers more advanced stuff.
