A state health official says the state plans to charge $60 this year for tests for the West Nile virus in humans. Epidemiologist John Pape says the tests will no longer be free due to budget crunches and an expected increase in West Nile cases.
The mosquito borne disease was detected for the first time in Colorado last year in hundreds of animals and 13 humans.
Substantially more cases are expected this year.
The health department has requested a $103,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control for West Nile testing this year. But it isn't sure how much will get funded. Last year the CDC paid $84,000 for tests.
