Why The Video Looks Shaky (Don Ward)

Most people go out of their way to keep their hair. But in Colorado Springs, some are shaving it off on purpose. The reason? To support kids with cancer, who have lost their hair during chemotherapy. It’s all part of an event called St. Baldrick’s Day.
12,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. But the survivor rate is increasing. And that’s in part due to people who are raising money to help find out what causes childhood cancer. Event organizer Kevin Johnson says, “It’s a disease we can cure, we just need more research and through that research we can really turn the tables on children’s cancer.”
Some people shaved their heads because a family member is a cancer survivor. Eric Miller says, “When the hair starts falling out really a part of their identity is gone, any chemo patient wheter a child or an adult. We’re all here in solidarity to say it’s just hair and we are all in it together.”
Dozens of soldiers are chroming their dome. And women are giving up their locks to make wigs for kids with cancer.
St. Baldrick’s Day is a worldwide event, but here in the Springs hope to raise the most money. The event raised $20,000 last year. This year they’re hoping for $100,000.
And if you’re looking for another way to celebrate St. Pat, Old Colorado City is goin’ green. Saturday is the 20th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s set to begin at noon and will make it’s way down Colorado Avenue. There’s also a 5K run at 10 a.m. and a Leprechaun Run at 11 a.m.
