A Pueblo woman who failed to get medical care for a little girl who was scalded has been sentenced to 48 years in
prison. Sue Williams pleaded guilty in January to child abuse resulting in the death of five-year-old Stephanie Martinez.
The 53-year-old Williams was among a handful of adults who neglected to seek medical attention after Stephanie was scalded in a tub of water in December 2001. The girl died days later from a blood infection.
An autopsy revealed more than 100 injuries on Stephanie's body consistent with abuse, including bruises, cuts and scrapes. Prosecutors said evidence proved the burns were intentional. They left straight marks that peeled through two layers of the girl's skin. Williams had said Stephanie caused the burns to herself.
