It's been sitting there for eight months without anyone noticing. But residents of Florence have suddenly learned that low level radioactive ore has been stored inside city limits since last summer.

Cotter Corporation says it has been storing the ore in sealed
containers in a trucking company yard since June. And Cotter officials
add, the radioactivity of the ore is so low they weren't required to tell anyone.

But, City officials say they should have been informed. Mayor Pete Gamache says he's concerned firefighters or residents might have been exposed to radiation if a fire had broken out or the containers were struck by lightning.

The containers will be moved to a mill near Canon City beginning
Tuesday.
