500 acres of grass and trees burned 3 miles east of Matheson Thursday. 12 volunteer fire districts responded to the wildland fire, first reported around 11:30 a.m. By 3:00 p.m. crews had the fire 100 percent contained. This was the second wildfire to burn in the Eastern Plains in so many days. Crews say dry, windy conditions could have made the fire much worse if it were not for volunteer's quick response. No structures or houses were threatened during the fire.
