Concealed Weapons Bill Approved in House Committee

A House committee approved a bill that would require sheriffs to issue concealed weapons permits to law-abiding citizens. A coalition of cities is opposing the measure but the County Sheriffs of Colorado support the bill -- saying it would tighten requirements for training and background checks.

Supporters say the state needs to fix the patchwork of gun laws that allow sheriffs to issue permits to people who do not live in their districts. Senate Bill 24 would give sheriffs power to deny concealed weapons permits to drug users or people with restraining orders. They also could issue 90-day emergency permits to people in danger -- temporarily waiving requirements for training.
