Thousands of people have begun snatching up reservations for their favorite state park campsites. It's the earliest ever, that campers can reserve a spot. But if you don't make reservations soon, you could miss your chance.

About 10,000,000 people visit Colorado state parks each year. Part of that is because the state advertises all over the country. Colorado is also an extremely popular vacation destination for families.

Campsites usually fill up on holidays and weekends. So by going online or calling now, you can reserve a specific campsite by number in any of Colorado's 44 State Parks.

With the drought conditions, park managers expect campers will visit parks earlier this year. "We're encouraging folks to get out and camp in spring and early summer when we know the reservoirs will be in good shape," says Dave Giger with the State Parks Department.

Even with lower water levels, most reservoirs will be accessible to boats early in the season. Only Elevenmile Reservoir, which is down 23 feet, Needs ramp modifications. And those should be complete by mid-April.

Park officials also say, if you camp early, you're more likely to be able to have a campfire. "There are no county or state bans, so if you come to state parks, as long as you're responsible, you can have them in state parks," Giger says.
