Two very different pictures of an Army officer are emerging in a Fort Carson courtroom: one of a ruthless man flouting Army interrogation rules; and another which depicts an interrogator being pressured to help defeat a growing insurgency.
The court-martial of Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer enters its fourth day today, with testimony resuming this morning.
Welshofer faces murder and dereliction of duty charges in the 2003 suffocation death of Major General Abed Hamed Mowhoush at an Iraqi detention camp.
Prosecutors say Welshofer abused his subjects by slapping them, allowing severe beatings, and slamming them to the ground, all to gain information that wasn't very useful.
Defense attorneys say Welshofer did nothing illegal.
