You've heard of the Amber Alert for kids, but what about an amber alert for senior citizens? If Senate Bill 57 passes that could become reality.
The bill proposes that an alert would go out for senior citizens 65 years and older who are reported lost and in danger. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says because of the way the bill is written, a senior Amber Alert would actually be less effective than the current system.
"We would call out search and rescue and police dogs to look for the missing citizen was even if they were 64 years old or younger," said Lt. Ken Hilte. "Thiis law requires the citizen to be at least 65 years old before we do that."
Many authorities believe the bill has good intentions but could jeopardize the current system by causing alert fatigue.
