A whooping crane brought to Colorado as an injured chick and who helped save his species from extinction has died.
The bird named Canus (KAN'-uhs) lived to be 38 before he died
last week.
Rescuers named the bird in honor of the cooperative spirit
between Canada and the United States in saving his species.
Canus had lost a wing when he was first spotted during aerial
surveys in Canada in 1964. There were only 42 whooping cranes in
the world at the time.
Canus was soon moved to Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge in
the San Luis Valley. He stayed there until 1966 when biologists shipped him to Maryland to join an endangered species research program.
There are now about 200 wild whooping cranes at the Canadian
park where rescuers found Canus.
