Scientists with the Federal and State GeologicalSurveys will use about $70,000 in grants and four additional seismographs to study the potential for major earthquakes in Colorado. The grants were awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The four seismographs are coming from the U.S. Geological
Survey's headquarters in Reston, Virginia. Geologists have yet to
decide where to place them.
Currently there are two seismographs in Colorado, but some
scientists say that's not enough for a state whose mountains are
the result of seismic upheaval more than 25 million years ago.
The last big earthquake in Colorado was on November 7th, 1882. The magnitude 6.6 quake occurred about 10 miles north of Estes Park.
