The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is proud to announce the birth of a female giraffe, born Friday evening, May 30. The entire birth was caught on home video from an 11 News viewer.

Zookeepers observed that the young giraffe stood up very soon after birth, nursed with mom and is bright and active.

The addition of this newborn increases the current size the world-renowned herd to 21 giraffes.

The giraffe calf, fifth born to the herd in the last 12 month period, is the eighth offspring for mother Riyadh and her first sired by the Zoo’s eight-year-old bull, Mawimbi. This is the third calf sired by the Zoo’s new bull giraffe. Mother and calf are currently resting off exhibit, until Monday morning.
