Four animals attacked people in El Paso County in less than a week. Two of the four incidents involved Colorado Springs Police Officers, one involved a child and the other, a teenage boy.

On Wednesday, a five year old boy, playing in his own backyard, is bit in the face by a pit bull in El Paso County. The boy is recovering at a Denver hospital with at least 2,000 stitches.

On Friday night, a Colorado Springs police officer shoots a pit bull at the Vineyard Apartments near Woodmen Rd. and Rangewood Dr. Officer Mark Daly says two pit bulls lunged at him.

On Saturday afternoon, another officer is attacked on Prospect St. near Platte Ave. This time, he's wounded. Officer Carlos Montelongo was bit in the behind. He didn't bleed but he did suffer from some bruising.

Police say, anytime they feel they're about to be attacked by an animal, they are allowed to use lethal force.

But in Officer Montelongo's case, he didn't see the animal coming.

The dog that bit him was a 100 pound brown and white dog. It was not a pit bull or pit bull mix.

"It's just another danger we have to deal with," said Officer Erwin Paladino, with the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Officers and a medical crew were responding to a call on Prospect Street. "A man was face down bleeding and throwing up blood," said Officer Paladino.

Police say the patient refused to go to the hospital and when Officer Montelongo tried to get him to go, "The dog came up and bit him right on the behind," said Officer Paladino.

The patient's dog will remain at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region for now. His owner was charged with having a violent animal.

The incident at the Vineyard Apartments on Friday night, left a pit bull shot and an officer shaken up.

"There were a lot of young people at the pool and then we saw some cops show up," said Marty Kulick, who is a resident at the Vineyard Apartments.

According to the police report, someone called the police and told them the people at the pool were disturbing the peace. But police had no idea there were dogs there.

"It sounded like an m-80 or something. It was a really loud fire work. At least that's what we thought it was," said Kulick.

But it wasn't a fire cracker, it was a single gun shot from an officer who said two pit bulls charged at him. He fired once striking one of the pit bulls.

"He was just yelling, you could hear him just yelling at the people in the pool area," said Logan Pounders, a resident at the Vineyard Apartments.

11 News spoke with the owner of the dog that was shot, he says Bam was hit in the mouth area but will be okay. He also said that Bam is a very gentle dog and did not deserve to be shot.

Both owners of the pit bulls were charged with having violent animals.

Then on Saturday night, another report of a dog bite was reported. This one happened on Hollyridge Dr. near the Hancock Expressway. It involved three pit bulls and a teen.

Authorities say the three pit bulls were fighting and the teen may have gotten in the way. They say the teen is expected to be just fine.

If I'm threatened or attacked by someone, I really hope these "gun happy" officers show up. I think there's a huge negative reaction when pit bulls attack people or other animals since they can be very aggressive. In fact, they have a reputation for being trained to be aggressive and fight to the death. But, if they're not handled responsibly, constrained, loved, treated kindly, and have the proper training, there is the chance that one of these animals could lose it, for whatever reason. We just don't know what could set them off. Owners need to be very cautious and aware at all times. Now, would you really fear being attacked by a poodle or a pit bull?? Yes, poodles may have the highest bite rate but... can they rip you apart and kill you? This is the point. The officer did not in my opinion "randomly fire his weapon". I believe he was faced with a very difficult decision and I support his action. Staci, I agree 100%.

yet again pits are evil little buggers. I'm glad to see one less in colorado springs. I hope the family of that little boy sue the pants off the owner of that pit.

Dogs are part of families. Of course it is going to be an emotional issue.

I agree with Cameo And Staci. Gun Happy toting police officerfs who will shoot just about anything b/c they believe it to be dangerous. 5 chiuahua, pitbulls, buffalo's....LOL, whats next maybe when they get home and their child rushes to them to give them a hug and a welcome home. He/She might be dangerous and need to be shot. I don't understand it. at the same time and this is in no terms directed towards these 2 animals, but if an owner fails to give the dogs proper training and raise them as they need to be raised and the dog does become vicious then yes put that dog down regardless of the breed. I say put the owner down.I own 3 pits and have a 2 y/old that lives with me and they love her and protect and take her antics b/c they have been properly trained and loved. I would never replace them with a lab or other breed of dog. Poodles have the highest bite rate in this country then I believ its labs. But as stated it doesn't make thenews b/c it isn't considered news worthy.

I really hope everyone payed attention to Saturday's attack. It was not a pit bull. Especially the ones that are against pit bulls. There are dog attacks all the time. Unfortunaltey, they only broadcast the ones involving pit bulls. Very sad. I own one and I am all for the breed.

Wouldn't you be pretty "Angry" too if a Co. Springs gun happy officer shot your dog without just cause? He was shocked to see the dog, wasn't expecting it and shot it without a reason other than his own belief in "Pitbulls". Please, why don't you post my first comment, I know the dog "Bam" and he is the most gentle dog I've ever come in contact with. He doesn't hurt anyone, he doesn't even protect as a dog can be expected to do. Co. Springs officers have been known for their gun happy tactics in the past and uncoath ways of law enforcement and I for one wouldn't put it past this officer to fall into that category.

There was a fog loose in the Springs Mobile Home Park by PAFB today and we can never be to careful around stray or any dog now..

Bam is a gentle dog and did NOT deserve to be shot nor did the owner deserve to be ticketed for a dangerous animal. The officer was gun happy and obviously has issues with pit bulls and shouldn't be allowed to randomly fire his weapon upon a dog PLAYING in a public area such as the apts. The dog was not only supervised but if you line up the gun shot wounds, you can tell he was NOT lunging at the officer. Co. Springs police dept. should be responsible for all charges regarding Bam's injuries and best hope they don't have a healthy law suit against them.
