Denver Broncos offensive lineman Dwayne Carswell is in critical but stable condition at this hour as he undergoes treatment for serious injuries sustained in a chain-reaction crash this morning.

Medical Center of Aurora-South spokeswoman Beverly Petry tells The Associated Press that Carswell is in surgery as of noon -- about five hours after the crash.

Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist told Denver's KCNC--T-V that Carswell suffered a torn diaphragm and internal bleeding in his chest. Doctors performed exploratory surgery to determine whether there were any injuries to Carswell's heart or aorta.

Carswell has missed just one game since joining the Broncos in 1995.

Police are trying to learn how many other people were hurt, and who was at fault.
