Around 60 people died over the weekend in southern India after drinking liquor tainted with lethal chemicals.

Bootleggers began selling the deadly brew on Saturday after police shut authorized liquor shops because of voting for the state government. In India, liquor stores and bars are routinely closed during elections so politicians can't hand out free alcohol to win votes.

At least 59 people are known dead so far. Six people have been arrested for selling the concoction, which police are still analyzing.

Locally made brew in India is sometimes spiked with pesticides or chemicals to make it stronger or increase the amount.
