11 News has learned the report of a possible plane crash turned out to be a false alarm Wednesday.

El Paso County Search and Rescue was searching for hours Wednesday before calling off the search around 3:30 p.m. They had been tracking a distress signal from a plane beacon that was picked up just before noon.

Steve Sperry of the El Paso County Search and Rescue says they were searching a 60-mile radius in the area of Northwest El Paso County near two small reservoirs.

If they were tracking a distress signal, how is that a false alarm? Who caused this and will they be liable for the expense of the search that was started? KKTV, give us all the details.... not just surface.
