A University of Colorado professor says a war against Iraq would be more costly than what most economists suggest. CU economics professor Jack Powelson spoke during a peace conference Sunday at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Well-known economists and federal officials say the costs of a war range from an estimated $55 billion in military expenses, to about $1.6 trillion in additional peacekeeping, reconstruction and other nonmilitary costs.
But Powelson says wars also impose costs not easily counted in dollars. He cites the ill will that wars generate among nations and the havoc they wreak on the environment.
About 300 people from the United States, Canada, Latin America and other areas attended the conference that ended Monday.
