Recent events inside the U.S. Olympic Committee have caught the attention of Republican Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska.
Twenty-five years ago, Stevens sponsored the Amateur Sports Act
that gave the USOC powers over Olympic sports in the United States. Now he's wondering if there should be changes.
Stevens has summoned USOC officials to a meeting later this month to discuss the future of Olympic sports in the United States. Colorado Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell has joined Stevens' call.
There have been five resignations in the past week protesting the clearance of USOC chief executive officer Lloyd Ward on conflict-of-interest charges. Three of those resignations came Friday, reportedly because information was withheld from them that might have changed the way they voted in Ward's case.
The USOC has had a lot of turnover at the top. Ward is the fourth executive since 2000, and the organization's 12th since 1978.
