The Debate Over Ethanol As Alternative Fuel
E-85 is 15 percent gasoline and 85 percent ethanol which can be made from corn and other crops. You can grow it and they're already doing it at farms in Southern Colorado. But some say it's just a waste of time.

Martinez, you should check your math. Sep. 2003 corn price: $2.20 Sep. 2008 corn price: $5.43 That's over 100% increase in 5 years!!!!

I have one E-85 car and I plan to convert the others. The increase in food costs are balanced with the savings in fuel costs, so it's a wash to me. If we end up paying more for corn and corn based products, then so be it. It's about time we paid American farmers instead of oil sheiks!

Now that we have bought into the "AMERICAN DREAM", which is living outside the "AMERICAN NIGHTMARE", the city, we are being sold a whole new helping of BS by the same people that sold us the first BS to begin with, who just happen to be the same people who are SELLING US and OUR COUNTRY. Don't think so? You need to WAKE UP!

Why shouldn't we attempt to be independent? Is Mr. Bryce supporting the terrorists? I would rather support LOCAL farmers, not arrogant bloodthirsty psychos in some desert. And as for the cost, I did the math, Petroleum has gone up 280% in 5 years, corn has gone up 45%, so what if I'm paying another 50 cents for corn flakes? It beats $4 gas any day. Ane we are making America better, any way you look at it.

Hemp is the best alternative for fuel. It is cheaper to grow than corn, it won't effect food prices and it would stop the war for oil. Hemp can be made into methanol, paper, rope , clothing, and so much more. Save our Earth and grow hemp! Stop the madness and get smart. If everyone knew the real truth behind why we don't use hemp for all our resources, they would know why the government is loaded and us tax payers are poor. They say it would put the paper and gas companies out of business, but why not turn it around and start a hemp business and profit just as much and help keep our Earth from being sucked dry of oil, trees, and cotton. God put it here for a reason and we aren't using it to our advantage because some paper and oil companies are worried about losing money. If I had a farm, I would grow it in mass quanities and prove to everyone that HEMP is the answer!

maybe there a few more units of energy created than consumed to make ethanol, but it isn't as many created by making gasoline. ethanol also consumes more energy units to move it from production to consumption because it can't move through existing pipelines like gasoline or diesel. e85 has 30% less power than regular gasoline and doesn't cost 30% less. consumers aren't really saving at the pump based on that.
