They've helped hundreds in third world countries get the medical care they need. Now some healthcare professionals from southern Colorado are giving back to their community. The group called International Surgical Missions is offering free surgical care for the uninsured on Saturday in Pueblo.
In both El Paso and Pueblo counties about 16-percent of the population is uninsured. Members of ISM saw this need in our community and are taking action. They've made seven trips to third world countries to help those in desperate need, but never before have they helped the people in their own backyards.
"On our last trip to Mexico we noticed the town was a lot like Pueblo, we decided it was time to give back," said Cameron Allen, a volunteer with ISM.
And giving back is exactly what they will be doing at the Pueblo Surgery Center on Saturday, offering free care to those in our community who need it most.
"We'll be doing hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery, colonoscopies, skin cancer removal, lumps and bumbs," said Allen.
He’ll will be helping out as a surgical assistant and is just one of about 50 volunteers.
"Pueblo Surgery Center has donated their 3 operating rooms, their colonoscopy suite and their staff," Allen said.
They'll help as many as they can in one day.
"I do expect the same caliber of what we've seen in the Philippines, Mexico and Honduras," Allen said.
And the surgeries they perform will likely be life changing for the patients, just like they are across the border.
The free clinic starts at 10am Saturday at the Pueblo Surgery Center, but all surgeries will be scheduled for the next week. The clinic is first-come first-serve, but those in greatest need will get priority.
