High gas prices have prompted Georgia to suspend its gas tax to give drivers a break. But before doing that in Colorado, political leaders say they must weigh the benefits against the blow to an already cash-strapped state.
While some states have a percentage tax, Colorado adds a flat tax of 22 cents to every gallon of gas sold here -- a tax that brought in 438 (m) million dollars for highway construction and repairs last year.
A spokesman for Governor Owens says the governor is keeping an eye on gas prices but rolling back the tax would seriously hurt the transportation budget. Democratic leaders say they're also concerned about the potential fiscal fallout if the state gas tax were lifted.
