New Gun Legislation

By: Associated Press
Updated: Mon 6:39 PM, Jan 13, 2003

The Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that would regulate guns statewide -- despite objections from police and community leaders.

Republican lawmakers say the legislation has a better chance this year because Republicans control the House, Senate and the governor's office.

Senator Jim Dyer says a statewide law is necessary because communities have too many confusing and conflicting local laws.

A lobbyist for the Colorado Municipal League, which represents about 260 communities across the state, says the bill strips local
communities of control.
