Winter Watering Days

Updated: Mon 9:59 AM, Jan 13, 2003

Homeowners in Colorado Springs are allowed to water their lawns a little this weekend. Today, odd numbered homes were able to water and even numbers can water tomorrow.

There are some things you can do to make sure you get the most from your winter watering, which experts say is one of the most important things you can do for your lawn. First, you need to test your soil. You can do this by sticking a shovel into the ground to see how far down it will go before you hit frozen soil. An inch of water can penetrate a foot of earth.

Next, plan on spending 4-6 hours watering, to give your lawn a good soaking. Because of the layer of ice, experts also say it will take a couple good waterings to really penetrate the ground.

Finally, experts say not to forget to water the tree branches and bark.
They say if you do that in the morning, the water will drip off and soak in during the afternoon.

And make sure you drain you hose, detach it from the spigot, and store it somewhere warm, so it doesn't freeze.
