High Fire Danger Wednesday

Western Governors Say Future Wildfires Possible

Western governors said that future wildfire seasons could be worse than they were this season unless the federal government provides enough money for fire prevention efforts. The Western Governors' Association sent a letter today to President Bush saying funds meant for prevention measures such as thinning forests often go instead toward putting fires out. The letter was signed by governors from Montana, Idaho and Oregon. The letter comes with Congress preparing to take up funding bills in January. The association estimated in June that it would need two-point-eight (B) billion dollars to execute its strategy for reducing wildland fire risks next year.
