State Representative David Schultheis says he plans to run for the state Senate next year in District Nine.

The seat in El Paso County now is held by Senator Doug Lamborn, who can't run because of term limits.

Schultheis is a six-year veteran of the state House in District 14, also in El Paso County. The Republican is an outspoken opponent of Referendums C and D.

Meanwhile, retired Air Force Colonel Kent Lambert says he'll run to replace Schultheis. Lambert's 34-year military career started at the Air Force Academy and ended with service at Peterson Air Force Base.

The Republican lost an election last year in House District 18 to Mike Merrifield, the only elected Democrat in El Paso County.
