A Colorado Springs businessman could spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl.
Forty-one-year-old Bruce Sams, who has prior felony convictions, faces at least 48 years in prison if a judge declares him a habitual criminal after a hearing August 19.
Otherwise, he would face at least eight years in prison.
Either way, Sams falls under a law that requires sex offenders to stay in prison until the parole board deems them safe to return to society.
Prosecutors said during a week-long trial that Sams kidnapped and raped a girl who had run away from a center for troubled youths on December 11, 2003.
