New Secretary of State

Former state Senator Gigi Dennis says she'll work hard to implement new voting reforms demanded by Congress now that she's officially Colorado's 34th secretary of state.

Dennis was sworn-in this morning during a ceremony at the state Capitol. The former Pueblo West Republican replaces Donetta Davidson, who resigned to join the United States Election Assistance Commission.

Dennis says Colorado already has a plan in place to implement the "Help America Vote Act," which requires a statewide voter registration system to be up and running by January First. State officials had said Colorado might not meet the deadline due to computer software problems.

She's spent the past five years as director of Colorado Rural Development for the U-S Department of Agriculture.

Dennis represented Pueblo in the state Senate from 1995 to 2001.

Governor Owens nominated Dennis for the post. He said this morning -- quote -- "We have one of the best of the best."
