(Denver-AP) -- A new study says that the rate of alcohol-related traffic deaths in Colorado has fallen 56 percent in the past 20 years.

The federal government study found that the number of alcohol-related deaths fell from 1.73 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 1982 to .76 deaths per 100 million miles last year.

Despite the long-term improvements, statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Colorado's rate rose 23 percent in the last three years.

Colorado State Patrol Chief Lonnie Westphal says authorities should develop new ways to attack the problem to make sure it doesn't start to rise again.
