Hundreds of people from all over the United States and Canada are in Colorado Springs to pay tribute to the fallen firefighters they loved.

The Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony took place Saturday afternoon. The names of 86 fallen firefighters were added to the Memorial Wall. For the first time a firefighter from Colorado Springs was included.

Lieutenant Donald Hekkers died last November of job-related small cell lung cancer. He served with the Colorado Springs fire department for over 30 years and was a medal of honor recipient.
Hekkers' wife Terry says his life's work was serving his community, and Saturday's ceremony paid tribute to that.

The IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial was created in 1976. Since then the names of 1,775 fallen firefighters have been engraved on its Wall of Honor. The City of Colorado Springs also has a memorial wall to honor local firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
