Colorado National Guard soldiers are joining 17,000 troops from around the nation streaming into the hurricane-stricken Gulf Coast.
Under orders from Governor Owens, about 100 members of the 220th Military Police Company and 400 members of the 169th Field Artillery Unit are heading to the Gulf Coast starting Friday.
The trip is expected to take three days.
The 220th Military Police Company returned from a year-long stint in Iraq in February 2004, and is now going to help restore order in the New Orleans area.
Meanwhile, state officials are assessing Colorado's capability to house any of the thousands of residents being evacuated from the chaos after the hurricane.
