A group of Afghan soldiers being trained in Afghanistan by soldiers from Fort Carson were involved in the deaths of four children on a firing range.
An army statement says three other children were wounded in Saturday's incident, which occurred during training conducted by U.S. Special Forces.
The statement says a battalion of the new Afghan army was conducting a mortar and recoilless rifle firing exercise at the time. An investigation is underway.
Afghan T.V. said the children died when a mortar shell exploded. The children were playing in the area. Residents say they didn't know the range was being used.
