A 1998 memo shows Denver police were told they could take home intelligence files in order to get rid of them. The memo by Lieutenant Joe Black was introduced yesterday in federal court by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union.
The A-C-L-U has sued the city on behalf of several groups and
individuals on whom police have collected information in so-called
"spy files.'' Some of those groups and individuals had no criminal
records. Black's memo in 1998 told officers to "shred, toss or take
home'' all files dated before 1994 to protect the department's
integrity and ward off lawsuits.
A-C-L-U attorneys says the memo shows there are still unanswered
questions about the files.
