Colorado's 28 public colleges and universities are struggling to balance budgets with less tax dollars than were promised in May.
The state has cut eleven percent, or $80 million through budget reductions in the past six months.
To deal with the cuts, community colleges have canceled library magazine subscriptions. Western State University professors wrap up their lectures, then empty the waste baskets and dust off the desks because cleaning crews have been laid off.
Among the hardest hit are Adams, Mesa and Western colleges on the Western Slope, which get 65 percent of their budgets from tax dollars.
Linda Curan is the schools' vice president of finance. She said they put more students in each class and delay repairs.
