Clear Creek Rock Slide Clean Up

It will be mid-September before crews can clear a rock slide on US 6 in Clear Creek Canyon, and the cost is now estimated at three million dollars.

Crews are having to remove much more rock from the 100-foot-high mountainside above the slide than originally thought. They have been working round-the-clock since the June 21 slide poured hundreds of tons of rock on the road just east of where US 6 and Colorado 119 converge.

The cost has more than doubled from initial estimates and the closure will last two months longer than first predicted.

It has diverted casino buses to Interstate 70, where they use exit 244, go east on US 6 about three miles to Colorado 119 and then to Central City and Black Hawk.

It also has sent some drivers on the new Central City Highway for the first time.
