A popular playground in Bear Creek Regional Park is off limits, at least for the next few months. That's because a motorist crashed a truck into the play area on Thursday afternoon.

Colorado Springs police say 62-year old Gerald Dienst apparently ran his 1993 Chevy pickup off the road at 21st and West Rio Grande Street. Dienst left the scene and was later found a home in the 1700 block of Mt. Washington Avenue. He denied driving the vehicle and tried to report it as stolen. But investigators say witness placed Dienst at the accident scene.

He is now in custody for multiple traffic charges and is considered a Habitual Traffic Offender.

Meantime, the playground will remain closed for the next two or three months, because of the damage and all of the broken glass and spilled chemicals from the accident.
