Republican Congressman Joel Hefley could face a challenger next year.
Former El Paso County Sheriff John Wesley Anderson is forming a committee to look into a possible run for Colorado's Fifth Congressional District.
Anderson says whether Hefley runs for an eleventh term will factor into his decision, but he hasn't ruled out running against Hefley, either.
The lawmaker has made no official announcements. But his spokeswoman says Hefley hasn't made any retirement plans, and people should count on him running.
The Fifth District includes Colorado Springs and El Paso County, plus Fremont, Teller, Chaffee, Lake and Park counties.
Hefley faced his first challenger in eight years in 2004, but easily defeated contractor and political newcomer Mike Payton.
Anderson served as sheriff between January 1995 and January 2003, after 22 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department.
He now works for Lockheed Martin as a Homeland Defense and Homeland Security subject matter expert.
