Water Rights

A court ruling that could leave hundreds of farms with no irrigation water has been appealed to the Colorado Supreme Court.

Attorney General Ken Salazar has filed the appeal and is asking that the case be given a speedy review. About 1,500 farms are involved.

A district court judge says the state engineer isn't authorized to approve the farmers' use of wells along the South Platte River. That means the farmers would have to go to water court for approval.

State officials say the farmers can't afford to do that and the ruling jeopardizes a big chunk of the state's economy.
