Qwest Layoffs

Denver based Qwest Communications has notified union officials it plans to cut 320 more jobs in five states, including 150 positions in Colorado. Qwest officials say the cuts in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa and Utah are in response to a weak demand for phone service.

Officials say they're hoping to avoid making the cuts until March 30th. They hope by then, they will be able to find a good number of employees to voluntarily leave or agree to unpaid leave. But union spokesman Lew Ellingson predicts few of the 320 cuts will come through voluntary departures.
