More is known about the accusations against a Fort Carson soldier charged with killing an Iraqi prisoner.
Prosecutors laid out their case against Staff Sergeant Shane Werst during a court-martial Tuesday at Fort Hood Texas. They say Werst tracked down a suspected Iraqi insurgent during a raid and then shot him repeatedly even though the man was unarmed and cooperative.
After the slaying, prosecutors say Werst tried to cover up his actions. They say he pulled out a non-military gun, fired it at a wall and then planted it on the dead man.
He faces up to life in prison without parole if convicted of premeditated murder and obstruction of justice.
Werst was a member of Fort Carson's Third Brigade Combat Team, which is part of the Fort Hood-based Fourth Infantry Division.
